Rose chafer beetle

The rose chafer (Cetonia aurata) is a reasonably large beetle (length about 20 mm or ¾ in) that has metallic green coloration with a distinct V shaped scutellum, the small triangular area between the wing cases just below the thorax. Rose chafers are found over southern and central Europe and the southern part of the UK.

Giant Otter

The Giant Otter is an amphibious, mammalian carnivore native to South America. About the length of an adult human being, it is the longest member of the mustelidae, or weasel family, a globally successful group of predators. Unusually for a mustelid, the Giant Otter is a social species, with family groups typically supporting three to eight members. The groups are centred around a dominant breeding pair and are extremely cohesive and cooperative. Although generally peaceful, the species is territorial and aggression has been observed between groups. The Giant Otter is exclusively active during daylight hours. It is the noisiest otter species and distinct vocalizations have been documented that indicate alarm, aggressiveness, and reassurance. The Giant Otter ranges across north-central South America, although its distribution has been greatly reduced and is now discontinuous. The species was listed as endangered in 1999 and population estimates are typically below 5,000 in the wild. The Guianas are the last real stronghold for the species. Decades of poaching for its velvety pelt, peaking in the 1950s and 1960s, decimated population numbers. Habitat degradation and loss is the greatest current threat. The Giant Otter is also rare in captivity: as of 2003, only 60 animals were held. The Giant Otter largely subsists on a diet of fish, particularly characins and catfish, and may also take crabs. It has no serious natural predators, although it must compete with other species, including the Neotropical Otter and caiman species, for food resources. (more...)

Cicada molting animated

A cicada undergoing ecdysis, the molting of the exoskeleton in arthropods and related groups. Since the cuticula of these animals is inelastic, it is shed during growth and a new, larger covering is formed. The old, empty exoskeleton is called an exuvia. Within one or two hours, the cuticle hardens and darkens, during which time the animal grows, since growth is otherwise constrained by the rigidity of the exoskeleton. The entire process takes about two hours to complete.

Natalee Holloway

Natalee Holloway (born 1986) disappeared on May 30, 2005, during a high school graduation trip to Aruba. The disappearance caused a media sensation in the United States. She was last seen by her classmates outside Carlos'n Charlie's, a Caribbean chain restaurant and nightclub in Oranjestad, with locals Joran van der Sloot and brothers Deepak and Satish Kalpoe. When questioned, the three men denied knowing what became of Holloway. Upon further investigation by authorities, Van der Sloot was arrested twice on suspicion of involvement in her disappearance, and the Kalpoes were each arrested three times. Due to lack of evidence, the three men were released without charge after each arrest. With the help of hundreds of volunteers, Aruban investigators conducted an extensive search for Holloway. The searches were unsuccessful, and according to Aruban authorities she is most likely dead. On December 18, 2007, Aruban prosecutors announced that the case would be closed without any charges sought against the former suspects. The Aruban prosecutor's office reopened the case on February 1, 2008, after receiving video footage of Joran van der Sloot, under the influence of marijuana, making statements that Holloway died on the morning of May 30, 2005, and that her body was disposed of. Van der Sloot has since denied that what he said was true. Holloway's family has criticized Aruban investigators throughout the search for a perceived lack of progress in finding her. (more...)

The Asia Portal

Asia is the largest continent in the world. It has a land mass at around 49,694,700 km² and covers 8.6% of the Earth's total surface area, or 29.4% of its land area. It is traditionally defined as part of the landmass of Africa-Eurasia lying east of the Suez Canal, east of the Ural Mountains, and south of the Caucasus Mountains and the Caspian and Black Seas.
Asia is considered one of the most populous regions in the world, containing around 60% of the world's human population. Of these only 2% live in the northern and interior half (Siberia, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Xinjiang, Tibet, Qinghai, western Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan).

The wealth of Asia differs widely between, and within, states. This is due to its vast size, meaning a huge range of different cultures, environments, historical ties and government systems. The largest economies in Asia in terms of nominal GDP are Japan, People's Republic of China and India, the smallest East Timor. In terms of Purchasing Power Parity however, the People's Republic of China has the largest economy in Asia and the second largest in the world, followed by Japan and India as the world's third and fourth largest economies respectively.

Asia is also known for its rich history and culture. Asian art, music, and cuisine, as well as literature, are important parts of Asian culture. Eastern philosophy and religion also plays a major role, with Sikhism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, Islam, and Christianity all playing major roles. One of the most complex parts of Asian culture is the relationship between traditional cultures and the Western world.

Cryptic turtle

A common snakeneck turtle (Chelodina longicollis) covered in camouflaging algae. When resting this individual would look like an algae-covered rock, an example of crypsis, the ability of an organism to avoid observation. Other ways an organism may be cryptic include nocturnality, subterranean lifestyle, and transparency.

มิตร ชัยบัญชา (28 มกราคม พ.ศ. 2477 - 8 ตุลาคม พ.ศ. 2513) หรือชื่อจริง พันจ่าอากาศโท พิเชษฐ์ พุ่มเหม เริ่มเข้าสู่วงการบันเทิงปลายปี พ.ศ. 2499 เป็นพระเอกภาพยนตร์ไทยในช่วงปี พ.ศ. 2500 - 2513 มีผลงานในช่วงปี พ.ศ. 2501 - 2517 ซึ่งเป็นยุคเฟื่องฟูของภาพยนตร์ 16 มม. มีผลงานนับได้ขณะนี้ 266 เรื่อง จากทั้งสิ้น 300 กว่าเรื่อง ผลงานเรื่องแรกคือเรื่อง ชาติเสือ ผลงานเรื่องที่สองที่ออกฉายคือ จ้าวนักเลง หรืออินทรีแดง ทำให้มิตร ชัยบัญชามีชื่อเสียงโด่งดังเป็นอย่างมาก ทำรายได้เกินล้านบาท มิตรมีผลงานแสดงเด่นๆมากมายทั้งบทบู๊ รักกุ๊กกิ๊ก รักรันทด ตลก เชยเด๋อด๋า หรือชีวิตเศร้าเคล้าน้ำตา ปี พ.ศ. 2506 ภาพยนตร์เรื่อง ใจเพชร ทำรายได้สูงสุด และมีภายนตร์ที่ทำรายได้เกินล้านอีกหลายเรื่อง โดยในปี พ.ศ. 2508 รับพระราชทานรางวัล "โล่ห์เกียรตินิยม"นักแสดงนำชาย ที่ทำรายได้สูงสุด จากภาพยนตร์เรื่อง เงิน เงิน เงิน และภาพยนตร์เรื่องนี้ทำรายได้เป็นประวัติการณ์ ปี พ.ศ. 2509 ภาพยนตร์เรื่อง เพชรตัดเพชร ทำรายได้ทำลายสถิติ เงิน เงิน เงิน ได้ 3 ล้านบาทในเวลา 1 เดือน และรับพระราชทานรางวัล "ดาราทอง" จากคุณสมบัติหลัก 4 ประการ คือ ศรัทธา หน้าที่ ไมตรี และ น้ำใจ ซึ่งแสดงถึงคุณภาพของผู้รับรางวัล ต่อมาในปี พ.ศ. 2513 ภาพยนตร์เรื่อง มนต์รักลูกทุ่ง ของ รังสี ทัศนพยัคฆ์ เป็นภาพยนตร์เพลงลูกทุ่งที่ประสบความสำเร็จอย่างมาก ทำรายได้มากกว่า 6 ล้านบาทและยืนโรงได้นานกว่า 6 เดือนในกรุงเทพ ทำรายได้ทั่วประเทศกว่า 13 ล้านบาท

8 ตุลาคม พ.ศ. 2513 มิตร ชัยบัญชาเสียชีวิตขณะถ่ายทำฉากโหนบันไดเชือกเฮลิคอปเตอร์ จากภาพยนตร์เรื่อง อินทรีทอง ท่ามกลางความอาลัยของมหาชน นับเป็นบุคคลธรรมดาที่มีผู้มาร่วมงานศพมากมายที่สุดเป็นประวัติศาสตร์ ได้มีการตั้งศาลบริเวณ หาดจอมเทียน พัทยาใต้ สถานที่ที่มิตร ชัยบัญชาเสียชีวิต ต่อมามีการปรับปรุงและสร้างรูปหล่อของมิตร ชัยบัญชา ในชุดอินทรีทอง ไว้ที่ศาลด้วย ปัจจุบันอยู่ด้านหลังโรงแรมจอมเทียน ในปี พ.ศ. 2548 ได้มีการสร้างละครเรื่อง "มิตร ชัยบัญชา" มายา-ชีวิต ทางสถานีโทรทัศน์สีกองทัพบกช่อง 7 ละครสร้าง ดัดแปลงมาจากเรื่องและเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นจริงของมิตร ชัยบัญชา เพื่อรำลึกถึงพระเอกดาราทอง ยอดนิยมอันดับ 1 ของประเทศไทย ที่เป็นที่รักของมหาชนคนดูทั่วประเทศคนนี้ ปี พ.ศ. 2549-2550 มีการรวมใจสร้างอนุสรณ์สถานมิตร ชัยบัญชา พร้อมหุ่นไฟเบอร์กลาส ที่บ้านไสค้าน จังหวัดเพชรบุรี บ้านเดิมของมิตร ชัยบัญชา ด้วย อ่านต่อ...

เพลงลูกทุ่ง คือเพลงที่สะท้อนวิถีชีวิต สภาพสังคมอุดมคติและวัฒนธรรมไทย โดยมีท่วงทำนอง คำร้อง สำเนียง และลีลาการร้องการบรรเลงที่เป็นแบบแผน มีลักษณะเฉพาะซึ่งให้บรรยากาศ ความเป็นลูกทุ่ง

ขุนวิจิตรมาตราบันทึกไว้ในหนังสือเรื่องของละครและเพลง ว่าเพลงลูกทุ่งเป็นวงดนตรีแบบสากลที่เกิดขึ้นในช่วงเวลาหลังสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 2 ประมาณปีหรือสองปี ลักษณะเพลงลูกทุ่งในระยะเริ่มแรก มาจากการร้องรำทำเพลงของไทยดั้งเดิม อาทิ แหล่เทศน์ สวดคฤหัสถ์ จำอวด ลิเก (ทรงเครื่อง) ลิเกลูกหมด (ไม่แต่งเครื่อง) ลิเกบันตน ลำตัด เพลงขอทาน เพลงพื้นเมืองบางเพลง ฯลฯ โดยเพลงลูกทุ่งนำมาดัดแปลงแล้วใส่ดนตรีแบบสากล เป็นลักษณะเพลงแบบใหม่
